Meta’s infrastructure and the high cost of scaling AI agents
Meta has its own models and designs its own server racks, but serving personal AI agents still requires energy and substantial capital spending. The company has promoted community benefits from its data centers, including its account that teachers in one school district received a sizable cash bonus when a data center came to town. Meta is already facing criticism over social-media addiction; its crisis-communications experience from the 2010s was described as potentially useful in navigating public criticism.
Instinct was described as growing quickly, with one anecdote citing messages from friends barely in tech who said they used it. It is very expensive to serve, currently charges users nothing and is losing money per user; that may continue for some time. Meta was also described as gating some onboarding, while Muse is expected to be expensive to scale as Meta works out monetization. The analysis projected that Instinct may need a major partner, with Google or Amazon mentioned as possibilities, to compete with Meta and other major players.
