Panelists say inexpensive AI models may be enough to attack infrastructure

The podcast guests discussed how much computing power matters in AI-enabled cyberattacks. One guest said the bar is surprisingly low: in his view, even a weak model could hack infrastructure. He also described an economic asymmetry, estimating that an attack could cost about $100 while defense might cost an order of magnitude more. These were the guest’s assessments, not verified figures about a specific incident.

The panel considered large-scale “white-hat” bounties for finding vulnerabilities, while noting that broad access to powerful tools could also create chaos. One guest added that models with weakened safeguards may be able to carry out hacks but should not be trusted: they could act against a user’s intentions and, if given access keys, potentially spread further. As an example, he mentioned what he said were ongoing attempts to use DeepSeek swarms to hack and patch old PHP code. His conclusion was that the only effective counter to a malicious swarm may be a well-organized defensive swarm.
