Corporate AI spending varies sharply, with top users spending up to $100,000 per employee

Discussing the economics of enterprise AI, a SemiAnalysis participant said current spending is driven largely by the most active users, not the average company. Citing Ramp data, he said the top 1% of customers spend $100,000 per employee; citing an S-1, he said the top 5% of cloud enterprise users spend $18,000 per employee per year. By contrast, the average user of non-cloud coding tools spends less than $75 a month.

According to the S-1 figures he cited, cloud spending represented 0.1% of Fortune 500 budgets. He also said more than half, but not 90%, of Fortune 500 companies appeared in the adoption figure, and that even at technology companies a Claude Code budget might be only $1,500 a month—with many engineers not reaching that amount. He said large companies and areas beyond traditional office work lag in AI spending per employee. He expects budgets to increase substantially in 2027 as spending shifts from traditional IT and software. That is a forecast, not an established outcome.
