Western AI ecosystem estimated to hold a 12–15x compute-capacity lead over China
An analysis estimates that the semiconductor capacity of the broader Western ecosystem—including Nvidia, TSMC, Samsung and Intel—is roughly 12 to 15 times that of China’s ecosystem. The estimate is based on assumptions about capital expenditure, equipment acquisition and yield rates, rather than confirmed figures.
DeepSeek will probably seek as much Nvidia access as it can, but Western AI labs are described as substantially better capitalized and having more direct access to chips. The analysis expects this advantage to remain roughly an order of magnitude for at least the next five years.
Chinese AI firms may therefore face continued difficulty scaling and funding additional chip purchases if they rely primarily on Chinese chips.
