Meta’s AI portfolio looked scattered before its strategy came into focus

Meta’s AI efforts were characterized as broad, scattered and difficult for markets to interpret, with little seeming to gain momentum. Vibes, its short-form AI video app, may have been quietly shut down or moved behind other tabs; its availability was uncertain. Meta Chat was described as a Gemini- and ChatGPT-like clone that had not really taken off, the Manus acquisition as a deal that had to be undone, and the short-video app as essentially a Midjourney wrapper.

A presentation linked Meta’s hardware investments with personal superintelligence and the positioning “AI that hustles for you,” making the pieces seem more coherent. That clearer fit was not taken as proof that every earlier move had been part of a master plan.
