Thomas Wright ties Utah’s growth to remote work and Deer Valley expansion
Thomas Wright, head of Summit Sotheby’s International Realty in Utah, cited the 2002 Winter Olympics as one turning point for the state: the event introduced more people to Utah and its ski infrastructure. But he said the market changed especially sharply during COVID-19. Remote work, access to mountain resorts and outdoor activities, proximity to the airport, and lower costs than Vail and Aspen attracted new residents and buyers. Growth has accelerated since then, Wright said.
He singled out the development of Deer Valley as a regional advantage. According to Wright, the East Village project doubled the resort’s skiable terrain. Four Seasons and Waldorf Astoria properties are being built in the area, while the Grand Hyatt is already complete. Wright also described Pioche Village as a more affordable option: a condo near ski access costs about $400,000. He said travelers can get from Salt Lake City International Airport to Deer Valley without passing through a traffic light.
Wright also pointed to the 2034 Olympics, planned resort development, and buyers seeking year-round recreation and access to the outdoors.
